Sailing the Canary Islands with G-Adventures
Fri 05 December 2025
I have scheduled this trip twice before with G-Adventures, it was cancelled due to Covid in 2020. I rebooked it for December 2022 and about 60 days before the trip, they contacted me to say the company they get the sailboat from disolved (didn't surive Covid lockdowns) and they had to cancel again. Both resulted in getting a credit +$250 from G. So, with a 25% discount special and the $500 credit I decided to make one more try to do this sailing trip.
I also found a special with United, the cost of a round trip tickets was discounted to $80K miles total. So, I book that (with $54 fees). This is mostly to start cashing out my Mileage Plus miles.
So, overall, a pretty cheap week long trip.
Day 0: Flight Denver to DC (door issue), connected to Frankfurt and made connection to Tenerife. Arrived approx. 1 hour before meet up time at the marina. Got there 1/2 hour to spare and time for a Mojito while waiting
Day 1 Isla de Tenerife
Flight from Frankfurt was delayed about 45 minutes, it was raining in Frankfurt. Like that always occurs in December, not sure why the delay. After landing in Tenerife, we got stuck for a bit exiting the plane. The buses weren't running from the tarmac to the terminal. Waiting on the stairs about 20 minutes for a bus. This made is tight to get to the marina by 4pm, but I made it with enough time for a unwinding Mojito before meeting the group.
Arrive to the boat at 4pm for a welcome meeting and safety briefing. Settle into your cabins before heading ashore to pick up supplies for your upcoming adventure.
Our Yacht (From G website):
Our 54 foot, Kufner Yacht was built in 2016 and refitted in 2020. It features a fully stocked kitchenette, indoor dining and lounging area. On deck there is open seating and lounging space on the bow and seating and lounging in a covered area on the stern. The yacht features 4 cabins, with showers located in each of the shared bathrooms and one on deck to use for rinsing off after a swim.
The boat was not the Kufner, but similar. Croatia boat.
Group: Simon, Linda, Ken, Brenda, Nancy, Alicia, Burton, Victor and Sebastian. Captain is Rita.
Met and got settled into the yacht. Went to the local supermarket to load up the food kitty for the week.
Dinner: Next to the Pancake place, but what did I have?
Day 2 Isla de Tenerife to San Sebastián de la Gomera
Set off on your first day of sailing from the island of Tenerife to La Gomera Island. Arrive to San Sebastian La Gomera in the afternoon and explore inland on the island and the national park.
On the sail, we saw sea turtles, dolphns and pilot whales. Crossing for very calm.
Afternoon: Swam in the bay, not "too" cold
San Sebastian is the home of the Worldest Toughest Row. A competion to 'row' across the Atlanic. From the Canary Islands to Antigua. It takes about 60-80 days and the launch is scheduled for mid December (weather conditions permitted).
Dinner: Restaurant in the Rock. Pork Cheeks, some eat the oink, I eat the smile
Day 3 San Sebastián de la Gomera
Day in La Gomera, we decided to hike the National Park. Very nice trail, well maintained. We 'staged' a Les Miserables type photo at the top. We stumbled upon a random encounter with a pair that teaches Salsa lessons on the island. They set up at one of the common stops to dance in the forest and promote their dance studio (on the far side of the island).
Dinner: the outdoor cafe. Had wonderful Pear pasta pouches with pancetta and a cheesy cream sauce. Also, had local cheese balls appetizer.
Day 4 Sailed to Santa Cruz de la Palma
With a long day at sea, try your hand at sailing or relax on deck. Arrive in Santa Cruz de la Palma in the early evening where you can begin to explore its variety of bars and cafés.
Calm day, so we hugged the coast of La Gomera before shooting across to La Palma. The wind squeeze between islands gave up some breeze, enough the we could sail most of the day instead of motoring.
Last day to enjoy sunny, clear, calm weather. We see the forcast changes tonight to rain and then wind for the next few days.
Day 5 Santa Cruz de la Palma
Hiking in the rain, National Park
We took the bus to the Las Nieves National Park. Forecast was for a very light drizzle. We got a steady rain.
After the hike, did a grocery run to fill up the ship again. I was told to get bananas and bread (aka Banana Bread). Did manage to find some local beers and sample the traditional potatoes with Red and Green sauce (Rojo Mojo and Verde Mojo)
Casanova has a historical tie to the city. So, we took some fun poses with him.
Dinner: very good dinner (slow cooked pork ribs), a waiter with a fun, quick sense of humor. Rita slipped out to go get some replacement shoes as we sat down. However, she had a bad experience with the store owner and decided in frustration that she'd skipped dinner and go back to the boat for early bed.
Day 6 Back to La Gomera
Voted not to make a long (15 hrs) trip to Tenerife, but went back to La Gomera. Ate same outside cafe as 2nd night in San Sebastian.
Dinner: Stuffed peppers with spinach and shrimp in a Mojo Rojo sauce. Baked cod main
Fun Uno but marathon, couldn't see to get a winner in the 2nd game. Played (and drank) until past midnight.
Day 7 San Sebastian/San Miguel Marina
Arrive back to San Miguel Marina in the late morning and disembark the yacht by noon.
Very windy, rough sail back. Perhaps 1 to 1.5 m swell and 40-50 knot winds
Group fair well at Pancake House. Salmon bagel sandwich, followed by an Apple-Cinnamon Crepe/Pancake and Flat white coffee.
Flight to Dublin this evening, overnight in Dublin airport, flight to London in morning. Lucky both Dublin and Denver flights equally delayed to fog. Make the Denver flight, and by luck made the Landline shuttle to Fort Collins
