Oops, punctures in backyard sprinkler system

Fri 15 August 2025

I put in some brick edging around the backyard deck. The metal edging strip, just didn't look good nor did it stop the grass from creeping under it and growing under the deck. It was a hassle to reach throw the screen to pull out the grass every few weeks. However, when I fired up the sprinkler system, I noticed several burbling leaks on the line that runs to zone #5. I didn't think the line ran so close to the deck footers nor that it was that shallow.

I worked with Lotic Sprinkler to get repairs. They were great, highly recommended. The first thing was after digging up leaks, was that, in fact, the sprinkler line was a good 2-4 inches away from were I put in edging spikes for the new bricks. It turned out that when the deck was built, that the installing of the metal edging (and U shaped spikes to hold it down) was the culprit of the punctures. While the spikes were still 'plugging' the holes that they made, the leaking was minimal. So, it was until I removed the edging and spikes that the system started leaking in ernest.

Three leaks patched. Lotic reviewed all my zones and fixed on questionable head on zone 3, cleaned two blockages on my front yard (zone 1) and drip zone (keeping the Rose of Sharon's from getting full water).
